Bidet hot water hookup
There are two versions of this question and they have opposite answers. If you have an electric bidet seat, do not connect it to the hot water line — TOTO's WASHLET installation guide states it as a safety warning: "Always connect the product to the cold water supply. Connecting to hot water supply may result in burns and equipment damage." An electric seat has its own heater. Feeding it hot water solves a problem it does not have.
If you have a non-electric bidet, the hot water line is the only route to warm water, and it is a legitimate one. Brondell's Element+ attachment is mechanically powered — no outlet at all — and gets its warm water by connecting to your sink's hot supply. What the product pages don't dwell on is what you are actually piping to the toilet. It isn't "warm water." It's your water heater's output — the same water that comes out of the tap hot enough to make you flinch — arriving at a mixing knob, aimed at some of the most sensitive skin on your body, with a slug of cold pipe water in front of it. None of that makes the hookup a bad idea. It does mean the decision deserves more thought than "warm is nicer than cold."

Everything below splits on this. An electric bidet seat takes cold water and heats it internally, either in a small reservoir or on demand as it passes through. Hot supply water is not an upgrade to that design; TOTO's installation guide warns against it in the same section as ungrounded outlets and wet installations, citing burns and equipment damage. A non-electric attachment or seat has no heater and no power, so the only warm water available to it is warm water you deliver. If you are still deciding which type to buy, that choice comes first — this page is about executing the non-electric route, not about picking it.
How the hookup actually works
It is a second supply line, run from the sink to the toilet. LUXE's installation guide walks the standard version: shut off the hot water valve under the sink, disconnect the sink's hot supply hose from it, fit a hot water T-adapter onto the valve (checking the rubber washer is seated inside it first), reconnect the sink hose to the T, then run the supplied hose from the T's spare port to the bidet's hot inlet. LUXE includes a useful trick for identifying the right valve: run the hot tap, close one valve, and see which one stops the hot water. The cold side is unchanged — it still tees off the toilet's fill valve the way any bidet does.
The hose has to get there, and it will be visible
This is the constraint that decides the project for most bathrooms. The hot water has to travel from under the sink to the toilet, and something has to carry it. LUXE's NEO 320 ships a 10-foot polyurethane hose and tells buyers to ask for a longer one if it doesn't reach — which is a polite way of saying that a toilet across the room from the sink is a different job. Bio Bidet, which sells electric seats and does not offer a hot-line product, describes the alternative honestly: running a line through the vanity cabinet or above or below the bathroom floor, which needs more plumbing know-how and carries an increased risk of leaks. If the run is short and hidden behind the vanity and toilet, this is a screwdriver-free afternoon. If it crosses open floor, you are choosing between a visible hose and opening up a wall.
You are connecting to water hot enough to hurt you
The Department of Energy recommends setting a residential water heater to 120°F. Plenty of homes run hotter — the federal facilities criteria DOE cites require storage at no less than 140°F to control Legionella, with a tempering valve downstream to bring delivery back to 120°F, and many homes have the higher tank setting without the valve. That gap matters here. A. O. Smith's water heater manual states that water over 125°F can cause severe burns instantly, and reproduces a burn-time table (attributed there to a 1978 CPSC memorandum) showing 5 seconds to a first-degree burn at 131°F and 2 seconds at 140°F. Those are the numbers behind the plumbing, and the skin a bidet sprays is thinner than the skin on your hands.
A mixing knob is not a thermostat
Read your model's documentation on this rather than assuming, because the distinction is real. Most hot-and-cold attachments give you a dial that blends the two supplies — a proportioning control, set by hand. A thermostatic mixing valve is a different device: it senses outlet temperature and adjusts to hold it. A. O. Smith's manual points at that difference directly, noting that under a national standard (ASSE 1070) and many local plumbing codes the water heater's own gas control valve should not be the sole means of regulating temperature and avoiding scalds, and recommending properly adjusted thermostatic mixing valves at each point of use. The practical consequence of a manual dial is that its output depends on both supplies staying steady. Set your dial by feel every time rather than trusting a mark on it, and treat the first second of any wash as unverified.
The first few seconds will be cold anyway
Hot water does not live in the pipe; it lives in the tank, and everything between the tank and your bidet is at room temperature until you run it. LUXE says so in its own installation guide — hot water takes a moment to arrive, and it suggests running a brief nozzle-clean cycle before the first wash. EPA's WaterSense specification for labeled homes puts a number on the same physics from the other direction: no more than half a gallon of water may sit in the piping between the hot water source and any fixture, precisely so residents aren't waiting and wasting. Your house was probably not built to that spec. A bidet wash is short, so on a long pipe run there is a genuine chance the warm water arrives about when you're finished.
One more connection is one more thing that can leak
A standard bidet install adds a T-valve at the toilet. A hot-water install adds a second T-adapter under the sink, a second hose, and a second set of compression fittings — on the line that will do the most damage if it lets go, since it runs continuously rather than only when the toilet refills. This is not a reason to avoid the job; it is a reason to do it deliberately. Check every fitting with a dry paper towel after the first hour and again the next morning, and know where your sink's shut-offs are before you need them. If a shut-off under the sink is seized or weeping when you first close it, stop and get a plumber — that's a valve problem you've discovered, not one you created, and it needs fixing before anything gets teed off it.
Who should do this, and who shouldn't
Do it if you want warm water, there's no outlet near your toilet and adding one isn't worth it to you, the sink is close enough for a tidy hose run, and everyone using the bathroom can reliably judge water temperature and adjust a dial. Skip it if you already have — or could easily get — an outlet, because an electric seat gives you warm water on a thermostat plus a heated seat and a dryer for the trouble. Skip it if the toilet is far from the sink. Think hard about it if anyone in the house has reduced sensation in the skin, from diabetic neuropathy or any other cause, or if small children use the bathroom unsupervised: A. O. Smith names children, the elderly, and people with physical or mental disabilities as being at highest risk of scald injury, and that's a question for a doctor or occupational therapist rather than a buying guide. And if you're renting, the calculation is different again — the hookup is reversible, but you're putting a wrench on the landlord's angle stops to do it.

- Measure the sink-to-toilet run before you buy. A dual-temperature attachment typically ships with a hose in the 10-foot range; anything longer is a special order or a different plan.
- Know your water heater's setting before you tee off it. DOE recommends 120°F for most residential use, and a tank running hotter than that without a tempering valve is delivering water that burns quickly.
- Run the water before the first wash of the day. Hot water has to travel from the tank, so the opening seconds come out at whatever temperature the pipe was.
- Set the temperature by feel each time rather than trusting the dial position. A manual mixing knob blends two supplies; it does not hold a temperature the way a thermostatic valve does.
- Check the new fittings for leaks after an hour and again the next morning. You've added a live hot line that's under pressure all the time, not just when the toilet refills.

Do you need a plumber to connect a bidet to hot water?
Usually not, if the sink and toilet are close together. The connection is compression fittings on an existing shut-off valve — the same class of job as installing the cold-side T-valve, done twice. Why does my hot water bidet spray cold at first?
Because the water in the pipe between your water heater and the bathroom has been sitting there cooling off, and it has to be pushed out before hot water arrives. LUXE's own installation guide flags it and suggests briefly running the nozzle-clean cycle before the first wash. EPA's WaterSense home specification limits labeled homes to half a gallon of water stored between the hot water source and any fixture for the same reason — long runs mean long waits. On a short wash, on a long pipe run, it's entirely possible the warm water shows up as you're finishing.
Is an electric bidet seat or a hot water hookup better for warm water?
If you have or can get an outlet near the toilet, the electric seat is the better answer for most people. It holds a set temperature rather than relying on a hand-turned dial, it needs no second supply line and no hose across the bathroom, and the same purchase usually brings a heated seat and other features. The hot water hookup wins in one specific situation, and it wins clearly there: no outlet, no appetite for an electrician, and a sink near the toilet.
