What matters before you buy
- Hinge mechanism quality and cycle life. The slow-close damper is the reason you are buying this seat, so it matters more than anything else. None of the Kohler, TOTO or Bath Royale spec sheets and product pages we checked publishes a cycle-life figure for its damper, so the practical signals are warranty length (one year on the TOTO SS114 and Kohler Brevia, two years on Bath Royale) and whether owners report the seat dropping faster or slamming as it ages. Look at how many real owner reviews a product has, and whether recurring complaints mention premature slamming.
- Seat stability on the bowl. A seat that drifts sideways under load is just as annoying as a slamming lid. Seats tackle this with bumpers on the underside, better mounting hardware, or both. Kohler says its Grip-Tight bumpers hold the seat firmly in place, while Bemis's Stay·Tite fastening uses a nut whose lower part snaps free once it reaches the right tightness, which Bemis says keeps the seat from loosening. Bemis also notes that a shifting seat often comes down to loose bolts or worn fasteners, so whatever hardware your seat uses, check the bolts now and then and retighten them if the seat moves, without overtightening.
- Quick-release hinges for cleaning. Any seat that cannot be removed easily will eventually be cleaned around rather than under. Quick-release hinges let you lift the seat off its mounting posts, clean the full area around the base, and put it back. Of the picks here, the Kohler Cachet (ReadyLatch), the Mayfair (Easy-Clean) and the Bath Royale (quick-release) lift off for cleaning; the Kohler Brevia has no quick-release, and TOTO's SS114 spec sheet lists none. If you buy a seat without it, factor in occasional tool-based removal.
- Material thickness and weight rating. Thinner plastic seats can flex under body weight, which feels less stable. Heavier polypropylene construction holds its shape better and generally feels more solid; Bath Royale, for example, markets its Executive Series as heavier and thicker than most plastic seats, with less flex. Enameled wood is the heavier, warmer-feeling option, according to Bemis, which makes seats in both materials. Neither material changes how you clean: Bemis rules out bleach and chlorine for both its plastic and enameled wood seats, and Bath Royale's care guide rules out cleaners containing chlorine. Choose on feel and rigidity.
- Fit: elongated vs. round. Elongated bowls are oval (roughly 18.5 inches from the mounting holes to the front of the bowl) and round bowls are more circular (roughly 16.5 inches). Using the wrong shape creates an obvious gap at the front or a seat that overhangs the bowl. The picks here are the elongated versions. Kohler (Cachet K-4639-RL, Brevia K-20111), TOTO (SS113) and Bath Royale (BR500) each make a round version, so order by model number for the shape you need; for the Mayfair, check the retailer listing for the round model. Can I clean soft-close hinges the same way as regular hinges?
Seats with quick-release hinges let you lift the entire seat off its mounting posts for full access to the area underneath. For the seat and hinges, a soft cloth with mild dish soap and water is the safe default. Check your maker's care guide before reaching for anything stronger: Bath Royale, for example, rules out cleaners containing chlorine, abrasive cleaners and harsh chemicals, and says to spray the cloth rather than the hinges so the mounting bases don't slip. Rinse and dry after cleaning.
Do soft-close seats work on both the seat and the lid?

Can I install a soft-close toilet seat myself?
Yes. Installation is the same as any standard toilet seat: slide the plastic anchors into the mounting holes, lower the seat, and tighten the bolts from above or below depending on the model. Kohler says the Cachet installs with just a screwdriver, entirely from above the bowl, which helps when you can't reach underneath.
