5 Best Toilet Brushes & Holders of 2020

Without a toilet brush, you wouldn’t be able to get the inside of your toilet bowl clean. You want to get the right one for your toilet’s materials and bowl shape. You also want the bristles to be thick so that it covers as much space as possible.

Yes, Some Brushes Use Pads Instead

For example, Mr. Clean MagicEraser Toilet Scrubber Kit uses blue and white pads instead of brush bristles. The pad comes with the detergent and a fragrance embedded into it. It is just as effective at getting toilets clean and the pad is disposable. As a result, you don’t need to worry about the scrubber getting disgusting and finding a way to clean it afterward. You also don’t have to touch the pads to replace them.

An Easy Way to Clean a Super Dirty Brush

Not everyone knows this but there is an easy way to clean the brush itself after you clean your toilet. Just put in a little bit of bleach into your toilet-be careful not to get it on the floor! Soak your brush into the toilet water for at least 60 minutes. Then leave it to air dry stacked between the rim and seat for at least an equal amount of time. Be careful not to leave it in for hours on end or overnight because you don’t want anyone to sit on it or accidentally eliminate on it.

Keep It Away from Young Children!

As gross as it is, some kids younger than four have been known to mistake a toilet brush for anything from a hair brush to a candy treat. At best, you’ll have to give him or her a bath and, worse, it could end up becoming a trip to the emergency room. As a result, it’s advisable to keep it away in your bathroom cabinet, kitchen cabinet, or wherever you keep your bathroom supplies with a child proof lock.

What’s an Eco Brush Typically Made Of?

Untreated beechwood and pig bristles are the main materials that go into several brands. However, some are also made out of terra cotta ceramic. Some have bristles in the back so that you can reach under the rim better. Naturally, the best part is that they’re compost able and can be mixed into your garden or plantar once they no longer work.

1. mDesign Compact Freestanding Plastic Toilet Bowl Brush and Holder

If you clean your toilet every day, this is a great brush for that. It comes with a soda can-like shaped holder that completely hides it when you’re not cleaning. The small size of the holder makes it ideal for tight spaces from half bathrooms to RV’s. It is made with durable plastic so it will not snap or break in half in your hands. It will also not leave your hands feeling sore. It’s bristles are medium to soft, which means it won’t scratch up your toilet easily.

Even though it’s very budget friendly, its black coloring makes it look luxurious. Since it’s made out of plastic, it shouldn’t rust. It is also designed not to stink unless you put it back in the holder while it’s still wet. It can flip out without the base being knocked over. It’s not very durable so it likely won’t get the hard-to reach spaces. Another advantage is that it’s lightweight and it’s good at getting rid of the tougher bio-hazardous waste stains.

Pros

  • It comes with a non-skid and non-slip foam that is guaranteed to make it stay in your hand.
  • It is a foam pad brush. As a result, it can clean hard-to reach spaces and prevents scratches if left on the floor.
  • It’s round disc shield prevents splash back on your hands.
  • It’s 16-inch handle prevents it from getting submerged into the water while you’re cleaning.
  • It is made with rust-proof material.
  • The brush is easily replaceable since it can come off with a screw. (If it’s really gross, you might want to consider wearing gloves while you replace it. At least wash or sanitize your hands very thoroughly afterward!).

Cons

  • The 16” handle is not a good fit to everyone’s height.
  • The soft brass version is no longer being manufactured.

2. Mr. Clean 440436 Turbo Plunger and Bowl Brush Caddy Set

This double set of a plunger and brush comes with a 12 and a half inch handles, comes with a non-slip base and hard gripping rubber. The brush has soft bristles and is stiff. The plunger is about 46 inches from the gripper to the top of the handle. It seems to be made from some kind of combination of silicone and petroleum. It takes up the floor space of two plungers so it’s not bad for small spaces. The caddy measures about 19 inches to the brush’s handle. If you’re going to store it on your shelf, it can fit into ones that are at least 18.5 inches. Perhaps one thing that makes this combination stand out is it’s blue and white coloring. Even now, you don’t see a lot of blue coloring on brushes and plungers.

It’s made out of durable plastic so it shouldn’t break too easily. As long as you keep it clean, it won’t stink and it won’t leave a rust stain.

Make sure to clean the brush and drip the excess water from the plunger. Otherwise, the caddy’s base could contain the dirty water.

Pros

  • Some reviews say that the plunger also works well as a sink plunger.
  • The plunger does not have a smell. A couple of reviews said that they could occasionally smell the rubber until it wore off but that was about it.
  • The plunger contains a pop-out extension.
  • This kind of combination is great if you tend to have a lot of guests over and are worried about giving the impression of a clean plunger and brush.
  • It won’t tip over the way some other sets do.

Cons

  • It’s uncertain if the caddy, brush or plunger can be replaced alone. I’d advise asking the manufacturer.
  • It does not fit under a lot of bathroom sinks very well.
  • The plunger doesn’t stand up to frequent use very well. So this is not ideal if your toilet tends to get clogged a lot.
  • The brush is too small for some people.

Since this is not a traditional brush and if you have been using traditional brushes up this point, it is said to get a little getting used to. However, most reviews indicate that it’s well worth the switchover. There has even been a question of whether the bristles touch the bottom of the base. However, whether they do or not, the bristles don’t bend. The most important thing is that there have been few complaints about it scratching the toilet bowl.

Cons

  • There have been complaints that it’s better for a quick use than for a deep cleaning.
  • The handle is almost 12 inches long, which is small for some.
  • It’s uncertain as to whether it’s Eco friendly. If you want to know, contact the manufacturer.

5. Home-it Chrome Brush for Tall Toilet Bowl and Brush Holder

The Home-It is made from steel powder coating. This means that it’s prone to rust. However, the good news is that it’s easy to wipe down with a clean soft damp clothe. Cleaners and polishes actually damage it. It is just over 13 inches high and the caddy without the handle is a total of 11 inches. While it’s aesthetically pleasing, there are quite a few complaints that the design or the manufacturing material is flawed. For example, there have been a lot of complaints about the bristles falling off if too much weight is put on it. There have been several about the handle breaking after just a few uses to a few months. You also may have to tighten the brush to prevent it from falling off. You also don’t want to store it too close to your shower because it often catches the steam, which can rust it if you don’t wipe it down afterward. As a result, it’s best to store it somewhere like your bathroom cabinet. The brush arrives black. However, there have been a few complaints about it turning colors when it’s placed back into the container.

Pros

  • It is covered by Home-It’s free lifetime guarantee.
  • Replacement brushes may be available. To find out, you can contact the manufacturer.
  • The canister has a removable liner.

  • The brush is capable of loosening if you put too much weight on it.
  • There have been some complaints about the handle breaking and the brush falling off after a few uses to a few months. One review said that adding superglue works to prevent it.
  • However, the superglue does not seem to work on the handle.

Conclusion

The BOOMJOY’s definitely my favorite. It has the fewest complaints and makes the bristles out of silicone definitely seems to be working. There have been no complaints of any rust and it’s holder doesn’t seem to have many complaints about being leaky or fragile in any way. I also love that it comes with tweezers and that the bristles don’t bend in reaction to touching the bottom of the canister. It is not as high maintained as other brushes and can be cleaned just under running water or with a light spray of a light cleaner like Lysol.
